About Wuzzy:
Loneliness wasn't at all uncommon for me, and since I had first been left alone to survive on my own knowledge and wit, I had become accustomed to experiencing the pangs that it brought. But before the day I was rescued from my usual solitary ways, I had never thought dreaming could never amount to anything.

As far as I remember, it had been a frigid day when the icy downpour was too much for me to endure. I retreated gladly into the shelter of a nearly ancient log, crouching down on the unstable bark with my striped fur brushing the musky-scented wood overhead. The watery vapours, churned up from the neighbouring river, misted over me, and overhead, bloated gray thunderheads swelled lazily. The rain's intensity increased so dramatically I could feel the minute droplets wearing away at the bark, some of them working their way into the log and dripping down into my fur. Through the dense cloak of fallen rain, a rain cloud suddenly erupted into a blinding bolt of lightning spearing across the sky, followed almost instantly by the shriek of thunder. I scented smouldering wood not far away, and a smoking tree trunk collided into the water's uneven surface as damp ashes pooled around my trembling feet.

The river exploded to my left and a wave massed up, bearing down furiously upon me. I scrambled to avoid it, but the log lurched beneath my weight and spiralled further into the full wrath of the tidal wave, which swept downward sharply and met with a bone-rattling crash down onto the log. Water weighed me down, drawing me closer to the sand at the bottom, my paws thrusting to swim, but instead churning up silt at the bottom of the river. I flailed desperately for the nearest waterlogged plank of wood, but instead ended up with a mouthful of suffocating water that seared at my lungs, and then stark blackness enveloped me.

When I awoke, I found myself settled comfortably in the center of a warm, downy cushion, my throat and lungs aching and my muscles burning sorely from my futile attempt to swim. A pale green Koi was standing over me, gazing at me worriedly. Behind him, a tall wooden wall, painted a pearly white, was overhung with photographs of beaches and swaying palm trees, and a wooden coffee table to the side was laden with half-read magazines in an untidy heap. Three beds in the corner, rather exposed, as they lacked any fanciness, stood erect, but only the Koi seemed to be present at the instant.

"Does anything hurt?" he inquired anxiously.

I managed to raise my head, with some considerable effort due to the fact that my body felt as though it was as taut as a bowstring, and a weak purr vibrated in my raw throat, and by some supernatural force I was able to refrain from wincing.

Relief seeped into the Koi's concerned eyes, but didn't quite wash away the troubled thoughts that lingered in the depths of his eyes. "I saw that it was raining, so I went underwater to avoid the risk of lightning and found you. I was so worried you might be..."

He didn't need to say any more, as I understood. I rubbed my head weakly against him, almost ready to faint from fatigue once again, but I kept conscious despite the protest in my mind, which was nothing more than a chaotic whirlpool. I slumped back down into the pillow, half-tempted to allow the drowsiness to overcome me, but my stomach was growling hungrily, and the Koi was looking at me with such sadness in his eyes, as if he understood what I had been through.

"You must be hungry," he said, almost as if he was reading my mind. "I'll get you something to eat. You might as well rest now."

Gratefully, I decided to take his word, easing myself further into the cushion until my eyelids were heavy with sleepiness. A minute before I had fully entered my dreams, I heard the vague murmur, "I've always wanted a Wuzzer."
