"Ah, welcome to my abode," spoke the seemingly astute as he just finished putting a single grey flower in a vase. "Make yourself at home and...oh...you came to find out more about me?" The grey meerca, known as gathonj526, then pointed to a nearby couch stating, "Here, you might want to sit for a while...my story is a bit long." Then the meerca explained his fate, beginning to end.

You see I am quite old now, but I was once a young happy meerca, enjoying my life in neopia to it's fullest. I played games with all the other meercas, groomed my tail to perfection, and had the keenest eye for the most delicious neggs. Life sure was a breeze, not having a thing to worry about and being spoiled by my owner. The perfect life and not a care in the world, what else could a neopet ask for?

Then, one day, all of that changed. All of my activities I enjoyed doing routinely became more like tasks than fun and I started seeking a new challenge. Looking back at the beautiful tail I had achieved, I thought in vanity, that I had the need for something even more beautiful to accommodate my tail; I could be the most beautiful neopet in all of neopia! I began this search by looking in all the shops, only to find a necklace here or even the monocle I wear, but nothing seemed to justify the beauty of my tail.

Well, I didn't have to wait long. One day on a stroll through Faerieland, I crossed paths with a beautiful earth faerie, trapped in a bottle. Feeling pity for the poor faerie, I released the faerie from its prison. Feeling deep gratitude for my benign gesture, the faerie promised me a wish to have granted at any time. I then told her my desire to become the most beautiful neopet in all of neopia. The faerie pondered for a minute and then closed her eyes. She had brought me to a mirror and I saw there, a pair of beautiful wings on my back! I turned around to thank the faerie, but to my surprise, she had vanished without a mere good-bye! I could only remember her appearance by the distinct scratch above her upper left eyebrow.

Ever since that day, I have been looking for that faerie, turning to books for knowledge in my quest. In one adverse consequence, I have become rather drab and grey like that flower I keep, waiting for one day to find her and give it as a gift. These wings I have been given will remind me of my vanity until I meet with her once again. Until then, my life long quest is inevitably fruitless at the time being.

I rose from the couch after hearing gathon's sad tale and offered consolation by means of help, which was met only with a, "do not pity me, I must find her myself." I walked to the door and bid gathon the best wishes possible on his quest and left the poor meerca, gathonj526, to his eternal task.
